Main Characters.

Main characters of the story were Santiago and Manolin. Santiago is an easy going guy and fishing is his life which he has made his living from . Santiago has gone 84 days without catching a fish and people are judging him for that , Manolins parents called him salo which means worst of luck so thats why they dont want Manolin to hang around with santiago .

Manolin is the other main Character, he is a young boy but for some reason he is aloud to drink beer. Manolin is Santiagos apprentice and his parents are trying him to stop from being Santiagos friend because Santiago has not bee catching fish. Manolin loves his master and I think he would even die to be with him because he wanted to go on the trip with Santiago that santiago said wa dangerous.I think he was a good character to put int he story even though he dosent say much.

I think the Author did a good job with the people of the story even though there aren't many he still did good real good .

Little bit about the Author

Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961), born in Oak Park, Illinois, started his career as a writer in a newspaper office in Kansas City at the age of seventeen. After the United States entered the First World War, he joined a volunteer ambulance unit in the Italian army. Serving at the front, he was wounded, was decorated by the Italian Government, and spent considerable time in hospitals. After his return to the United States, he became a reporter for Canadian and American newspapers and was soon sent back to Europe to cover such events as the Greek Revolution.

Hemingway attempted suicide in the spring of 1961, and received ECT treatment again. On the morning of July 2, 1961, some three weeks short of his 62nd birthday, he died at his home in Ketchum, Idaho, the result of a self-inflicted shotgun wound to the head. Judged not mentally responsible for his final act, he was buried in a Roman Catholic service. Hemingway himself blamed the ECT treatments for "putting him out of business" by destroying his memory; some medical and scholarly opinion has been receptive to this view, although others, including one of the physicians who prescribed the electroshock regimen, dispute that opinion.[citation needed]

the story

Santiago, an old fisherman, has gone eighty-four days without catching a fish. For the first forty days, a boy named Manolin had fished with him, but Manolin's parents, who call Santiago salao, or “the worst form of unlucky,” forced Manolin to leave him in order to work in a more prosperous boat. The old man is -wrinkled, splotched, and scarred from handling heavy fish on cords, but his eyes, which are the color of the sea, remain cheerful and undefeated.

The next day santiago went out to the sea and started on a 4 day journey fishing. With in these 4 days he will catch the largst marlin ever caught in the cuban sea , He will be attacked numerouse times by sharks which he fights, his hand will die , and he will be praised for bringing back the biggest fish ever caugth .

After his 4 days at sea he row home and goes to his home and goes to sleep, when sleeping he dreams about lions and and different exotic animals and thats the end .

really dull end. I wished it would have been better, but I think the Author did it for a reason. This boook was a master piece and it must have been made that way for a reason .
